Hello, homemaker!
My family is sensitive to synthetic scents, so creating our own air freshener felt like the perfect way to fill our home with natural aromas instead of harsh chemicals. Once I learned how easy it is to make a homemade gel air freshener, I never looked back at store-bought options—and honestly, I wish I’d started sooner.
If you’ve ever gotten a headache from artificial fragrances, worried about what’s in commercial air fresheners, or just want a safer way to keep your home smelling fresh, this DIY is for you. You're going to love this DIY—It's easy, cheap and non-toxic!
I’ve even included this gel air freshener in my Homemade Christmas Series because it’s such a simple way to bring the aromas of the season indoors. Using essential oils like clove, pine, and orange, you can enjoy cozy, festive scents all throughout the holiday season without overwhelming fragrances. I also love how festive it looks—especially when made with red or green, making it as pretty as it is practical.

Why I Ditched Store-Bought Air Fresheners
Most conventional air fresheners contain synthetic fragrances and chemicals that can trigger headaches, allergies, or respiratory irritation—especially for kids and pets. Even products labeled “natural” often hide fragrance blends that aren’t fully disclosed. Artificial fragrances, including perfumes, give my son headaches, which is why I only use natural aromas in our home, typically through an oil diffuser or humidifier.
What I love about gel air fresheners is that they allow me to bring gentle, natural scents into every corner of our home—bathrooms, closets, under the sink, and even the pantry—without relying on sprays, plug-ins, or overpowering fragrances.
Making your own gel air freshener gives you:
- Full control over ingredients
- Customizable scents
- A budget-friendly alternative
- Peace of mind knowing what’s in your air
And the best part? It takes less than 10 minutes to make.
What Is a Gel Air Freshener?
A gel air freshener is a solid, scented gel that slowly releases fragrance into the air. Unlike sprays or plug-ins, it doesn’t rely on heat, aerosols, or electricity. The scent gently diffuses as the gel naturally evaporates.
This makes it perfect for:
- Bathrooms
- Bedrooms
- Closets
- Laundry rooms
- Entryways

- Place uncovered where you want a gentle, natural scent.
Best Essential Oils for Gel Air Fresheners
One of my favorite things about making our own air fresheners is tailoring the scent to the season—or even my mood.
Here are some tried-and-true combinations:
- Lavender + Lemon – Clean and calming
- Orange + Clove – Cozy and warm
- Eucalyptus + Mint – Fresh and energizing
- Vanilla + Sweet Orange – Soft and comforting
- Tea Tree + Lemon – Great for bathrooms
- Orange + Clove + Pine - Christmas
If you have kids or pets, always research essential oil safety and use fewer drops for a lighter scent.
Use Only Pure Essential Oils

Using oils with synthetic fragrances is no different than buying store-bought air fresheners. If your goal is to fill your home with truly natural aromas, it’s important to choose pure essential oils only.
My absolute favorites are Aura Cacia Essential Oils. They’re a trusted company known for producing pure, complete, and unadulterated, high-quality oils, which gives me peace of mind knowing exactly what my family is breathing in.
How Long Does It Last?
A homemade gel air freshener typically lasts 4 weeks, depending on room temperature and airflow. When the scent fades, you can:
- Add a few more drops of essential oil
- Replace the gel entirely (it’s compostable!)
Tips for Success
- Use glass containers to avoid absorbing scents into plastic
- Start with fewer drops of essential oil and adjust
- Keep out of direct sunlight to extend scent life
- Label jars if you’re making multiple scents
