Hello, homemaker!
If you’ve been looking for a light, non-greasy lotion that you can make over and over again for your family, you’re in the right place. 💛
I started making more homemade self-care products not too long ago—mainly for my son, but also because I wanted to cut back on how much we rely on store-bought products.
That mindset is what inspired my goal to make 100 things from scratch in one year, and this homemade glycerin lotion is my 43rd homemade project.
I really wanted to learn how to make things from scratch, to know exactly what goes into the products we use every day, and honestly, to feel more confident not having to depend on stores for everything.
When my son developed a type of dermatitis on his back, his doctor suggested switching to very gentle skincare. That was the final nudge I needed to fully dive into homemade skincare alternatives. After some research (and a little experimenting), I came up with this homemade glycerin lotion, and I can’t even tell you how much I love it.
Out of all the skincare products I’ve made so far—right alongside my favorite Castile soap and homemade blush—this lotion has quickly become a staple in our home. Unlike my homemade lotion bars, which can feel a bit heavy or greasy at times, this lotion is incredibly light. It absorbs beautifully into the skin, has the faintest hint of coconut, and most importantly… it actually works!
But don’t get me wrong—I still love my homemade lotion bars. I bring one with me wherever we go because they’re perfect for those moments when we need a little moisturizer on the go.
What Exactly Is Glycerin?

Glycerin (also called glycerol) is a clear, odorless, plant-derived liquid that occurs naturally in fats and oils. In skincare, it’s most commonly sourced from vegetable oils and is widely known for its ability to deeply hydrate the skin.
What makes glycerin so special is that it’s a humectant, meaning it attracts water from the air and draws moisture into the outer layer of the skin. Instead of sitting on top like some heavy creams, glycerin works by helping your skin hold onto hydration.
It’s gentle, non-toxic, and safe for all ages, which is why it’s often recommended by dermatologists for sensitive skin, eczema, and dermatitis. You’ll find glycerin in many commercial lotions and soaps—but when you make products at home, you get the benefits without unnecessary additives.
Why Glycerin Is Amazing for Skin
Glycerin is a natural humectant, which means it helps draw moisture into the skin and keeps it there. This makes it especially wonderful for:
- Dry or sensitive skin
- Eczema or dermatitis-prone skin
- Children’s delicate skin
- Everyday lightweight moisturizing
Unlike heavier lotions that can sit on top of the skin, glycerin-based lotions feel breathable and soothing. They don’t clog pores, and they leave skin feeling soft without being greasy.
Why I Love Making Lotion at Home
Making lotion at home gives me peace of mind. I don’t have to worry about artificial fragrances, preservatives, or mystery ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin. Instead, I can keep things simple, gentle, and customizable.
Some of my favorite benefits of homemade lotion:
- Fewer ingredients
- Budget-friendly over time
- Customizable for your family’s needs
- Less packaging and waste
- No last-minute store runs
