Cleaning isn't about perfection; it's about creating an environment that supports and enriches your life. So take a deep breath, embrace the routine, and find joy in the calm and clarity a clean space brings. - Joys of Homemaking

Hello, homemaker!

Does keeping your home clean and organized feel like a never-ending battle? Trust me—I've been there! Maintaining a tidy living space was always a challenge for me, too. I'd often look at the clutter around my home, feeling overwhelmed and wondering how I'd ever find the time to clean it all.

Dust bunnies hiding in corners, clothes scattered across the floor, and piles of dishes waiting in the sink used to stress me out. I'd convince myself I'd tackle it all when I had an entire day free. But let's face it—who really has a whole day to dedicate solely to cleaning?

Thankfully, I discovered that maintaining a clean home doesn't need to be a daunting task. Instead of letting chores pile up, I created a simple weekly cleaning checklist. By breaking tasks into manageable pieces throughout the week, cleaning became stress-free and even enjoyable!

Why You Need a Weekly Cleaning Routine

With everything we juggle—work, kids, and the rare moment for ourselves—keeping our home clean can sometimes feel like just another overwhelming task on the never-ending to-do list. But over time, I’ve discovered that sticking to a weekly cleaning routine doesn’t just keep my space tidy—it also simplifies my life in ways I never expected. Here are four compelling reasons to embrace this habit:

1. Make Cleaning Less Overwhelming

I used to put off cleaning until everything felt out of control. Just glancing around the room would stress me out, and I’d find myself thinking, Where do I even begin?

Breaking the workload into smaller, manageable chunks changed everything. Now, I focus on one area per day—like the kitchen on Mondays, the bathroom on Tuesdays, and so on. Instead of dedicating a full day to deep-clean the entire house, I chip away at it little by little. This keeps the mess at bay and makes the process far less stressful.

2. Boost Mental Clarity and Well-Being

A cluttered space can easily lead to a cluttered mind. You’ve probably felt it—that unease that creeps in when you walk into a messy room. It can feel like visual noise, making it hard to focus or relax.

But when my space is clean, my mind feels clearer. I can think more freely, feel more at peace, and even get more creative. For me, tidying up my surroundings often feels like tidying up my thoughts, too.

3. Promote a Healthier Living Environment

Life gets messy—especially with pets, kids, or both. Dust, allergens, and grime can accumulate surprisingly fast, and if left unchecked, they can lead to health issues like allergies or respiratory discomfort.

By setting aside a little time each week to clean, I’m not just maintaining appearances—I’m helping create a healthier home. It’s a simple step that helps ensure my family can breathe easier and stay well.

4. Create a Habit That Sticks

One of the biggest benefits of a weekly cleaning schedule is consistency. When cleaning becomes part of your routine, it stops feeling like a big event and starts becoming second nature. Eventually, it’s just something you do—like brushing your teeth or pouring your morning coffee. And the more consistent you are, the less effort it takes.

Weekly Cleaning Checklist

Monday – Kitchen Day

The kitchen is the heart of your home, so keeping it clean is important. It’s the place where you whip up delicious meals, gather with family, and enjoy a late-night snack. A clean kitchen not only looks great, but it also helps keep germs at bay and makes cooking a more pleasant experience.

  • Wipe down countertops. You might be surprised at how much gunk can build up there, from crumbs to spills. Grab a multipurpose cleaner or a mix of water and vinegar, and give those surfaces a good scrub.
  • Clean the sink. To clean it, you just need some dish soap and a sponge. (I make my own dish soap. Here's how to make it!).Scrub the sink’s surface and the faucet, and make sure to rinse everything well afterward.
  • Clean the stove. Use degreaser to remove grease splatters and burnt-on food.
  • Clean out the fridge. Simply go through the items, tossing out anything that’s expired or no longer good to eat. Wipe down shelves with a cloth and some soapy water.
  • Take out the trash and mop the floor. Remove garbage, and then give your floor a good cleaning with a mop to prevent smells and pests.

Tuesday – Bathroom Focus

Cleaning your bathroom might not be the most exciting thing on your to-do list, but trust me, it’s essential. Bathrooms are used daily for personal hygiene, and they can quickly become a breeding ground for germs. Giving your bathroom a good clean helps maintain a healthy environment.

  • Clean the sink. Use a gentle cleanser to wipe away soap scum and toothpaste stains. Make sure to scrub around the faucet as well since it can collect grime
  • Tackle the toilet. This is perhaps the most dreaded part of bathroom cleaning, but it’s important. Use a toilet cleaner and a toilet brush to scrub under the rim and inside the bowl. For the outside, just take a disinfectant wipe and clean all surfaces, including the handle.
  • Wipe mirrors. Just spray and wipe with a microfiber cloth to achieve a streak-free finish.
  • Clean the shower. Use a bathroom cleaner suitable for your shower materials, and spray it all over the surfaces. Let it sit briefly, scrub with a sponge, and rinse well. Looking for natural shower cleaners? Check out this post.
  • Take out the trash. Empty the bin and replace the liner.
  • Don’t forget to mop the floor. Mopping the floor helps remove dirt and grime that settle on the floor, keeping it clean and hygienic.

Wednesday – Floors

Floors are the surface you walk on every day, and they can gather dirt, dust, and allergens pretty quickly. Keeping them clean not only makes your home look better but also helps your health.

  • Sweep or vacuum. Use a broom for hard floors or a vacuum for carpets to make this job easier. Take your time and go to every corner, including under the furniture, where dirt tends to hide.
  • Mop. If you have hardwood or tile floors, mopping picks up any leftover grime that sweeping might have missed. Use a suitable cleaner for your floor type.
  • Tackle stains. Accidents happen, and that spilled drink or muddy footprint can leave a mark. For carpet stains, consider a carpet cleaner or blotting with water and vinegar.

Thursday – Bedrooms

A tidy bedroom can lead to better sleep and a more positive mindset. That’s why setting aside a specific day to give your bedrooms a thorough cleaning can make a significant difference.

  • Dust all surfaces. Grab a microfiber cloth or a duster and go over all surfaces, starting from the highest points and working your way down. Don’t forget to dust light fixtures and ceiling fans.
  • Change your bed linens. Aim to change your sheets at least once a week for optimal comfort.
  • Organize your closet. Hang your clothes neatly and arrange similar items so getting dressed becomes quicker and easier.
  • Vacuum or sweep the floor. Use a vacuum cleaner for carpets, and if you have hardwood or tiled floors, a broom or a microfiber mop will do just fine. Make sure to reach under the bed and other furniture where dust might hide.

Friday – Laundry

Friday is the perfect day to tackle laundry, and having a clear plan can make the task less overwhelming.

  • Sort Laundry. This prevents color from bleeding or fabrics from getting damaged. Separate your clothes into three main categories: whites, dark colors, and delicates.
  • Check the care labels on garments. Taking a moment to read these labels can help prevent any mishaps, like shrinking your favorite sweater or damaging delicate fabrics.
  • Wash clothes. Use the right amount of detergent, as using too much can leave residue on your clothes. Select the appropriate washing cycle according to the load you have.
  • Dry clothes. If you prefer using a dryer, toss your clothes in and choose the right drying cycle. If you have delicate items, consider air-drying them instead.
  • Fold or hang clothes. Once your clothes are dry, take the time  to fold or hang them neatly. This will prevent wrinkles and help you stay organized for the week ahead.

Weekend – Catch – Up or Deep Clean

On weekends, I either do a quick tidy-up to keep my space organized or a more thorough deep clean to really get everything spotless.

  • Quick catch-up. This is perfect if you’ve had a busy week and your space has accumulated some clutter. Quickly pick up any items that are out of place, like shoes, books, or toys. Dust off surfaces and fluff the cushions to make the space look inviting again.
  • Deep clean. If you’ve had a quieter weekend or are feeling up for it, you might want to dive into a deep clean instead.  This means getting into the nitty-gritty that usually gets missed during regular cleaning sessions. You might start by dusting light fixtures, wiping down baseboards, and cleaning behind appliances like the fridge or oven.

Tips to Stay Consistent with Weekly Cleaning

Staying consistent with weekly cleaning can be a bit of a challenge, especially when life gets busy. We’ve all been there—work, social plans, family responsibilities, and before you know it, cleaning is the last thing on your mind. Here are four tips that have helped me stay on track with my cleaning routine, and I hope they can help you too!

1. Set reminders

Setting reminders is something I swear by. It’s so easy to forget about cleaning, especially if there are a lot of other things on your plate. You can schedule reminders in your phone’s calendar or use a task management app. For instance, if you choose Saturday mornings for cleaning, set a reminder to buzz your phone at 9 AM. This way, you won’t have to rely on memory alone, and it will feel like you have a personal assistant on standby, gently pushing you to get started.

2. Get the family involved.

When everyone pitches in, not only does the work get done faster, but it also brings a sense of teamwork. Kids can help with wiping down surfaces and organizing their toys, while adults can tackle the bigger jobs like mopping or deep cleaning bathrooms. You can also turn it into a friendly competition to see who can clean their space the fastest, or start a reward system for completed tasks, like a family movie night or a special treat.

3. Use music or timers

Everyone enjoys a good tune, and listening to music while you tackle chores can elevate your mood and make the process much more enjoyable. Crank up that playlist, sing along, and before you know it, your cleaning tasks are done.

Another useful tip is to use timers. Set the timer for 15 or 20 minutes, and clean as much as you can within that time. Knowing you have a little time can help you concentrate better and tidy up quickly. When the timer goes off, you can take a short break or reward yourself with something simple like a cup of tea or a stroll outside.

4. Create a routine that fits your lifestyle.

Think about your week ahead and figure out the best time for you to clean. If you’re someone who wakes up early, consider dedicating a portion of your morning to tidying up. If your afternoons after work are more relaxed, set aside some time then. The key is to choose a time that you can stick to consistently.
