Hello, joyful homemaker!
I'll be honest—keeping a tidy room was never really my strength. I wasn’t exactly the neat and organized type, and cleaning used to feel like such a chore.
But since moving into our new home (we retired and relocated from Puerto Rico to the Philippines), something shifted. I’ve made it a goal to keep our space clean and organized, and surprisingly, it’s been a game-changer. I’ve noticed that when our bedroom is clean—especially when the bed is made—I feel more productive, focused, and ready to take on the day.
We've all been there. One day, your room is neat and spotless, and the next, it looks like a tornado of clothes, bags, and random clutter swept through. It can feel overwhelming trying to keep up with the mess, especially when life gets busy. But that’s where having a simple, effective cleaning routine helps—and that's exactly what I’m sharing with you today.
Cleaning your bedroom doesn’t have to take hours. In this post, I’m sharing a routine I follow to keep our bedroom clean every single day. It’s simple, manageable, and totally worth the effort.
Simple Steps For Keeping Your Bedroom Clean in Minutes

Clean the bedroom at night
If you think cleaning your bedroom in the morning is daunting, take a few minutes to make your room clean at night instead. Take all the toys and put them into their proper places. Put away your dirty clothes into the hamper, and clear the floor space with all the messes. That's one less thing to do in the morning, so you can proceed with your morning tasks with an already clean bedroom!
Make the bed first thing in the morning
There’s just something about starting the day with a neatly made bed—it boosts my mood and instantly makes me feel more positive and energized. Now that I usually tidy up the bedroom the night before, my morning routine is pretty quick. I just clear off the bedside tables and take out any trash from the bathroom, and that’s it!
Pick up your laundry
One of the obvious messes you'll find in a bedroom is dirty clothes strewn into the floor or left sitting on the chair. Take out your dirty clothes and put them in the laundry basket. You should also put away your clean clothes inside your wardrobe and closet. Doing this can make your bedroom much less chaotic, and that's almost half the battle won!
Go around the room with a garbage bag in hand
Pick up obvious trash as you go, from food wrappers to discarded random items like tissues, receipts, and all other items that add chaos to your messy room. You're not deep cleaning yet, so focus on the trash that's in plain sight for now.
Have a place for everything
A place for everything, and everything in its place.
One of the best ways to keep your room clean is to put everything where they belong. I recommend putting away clean clothes as soon as you've folded them. I also like putting tiny items I use every day, like keys, eyeglasses, and favorite pieces of jewelry, in a small dish on my bedside table or vanity for easy access.
It also helps to pick up random items as soon as you see them and put them in their proper places.
Remove stray items from your bedroom
The bedroom must be a place for rest and relaxation, and anything that does not belong here must be removed and returned to its proper place. Did you eat food delivery in your bedroom and accumulate dirty dishes? Pick those up and bring them to the kitchen sink. Having so much stuff that doesn't can be an eyesore, and they contribute to good quality sleep and relaxation. Don't procrastinate and pick up trash and random stuff before they turn into one big pile.
Clean dusty surfaces
Dust bunnies can accumulate quickly in your bedroom, so it's always good to clean surfaces every day. Start with the highest ones, such as headboards, desk drawers, shelves, wall art, and picture frames. Use a feather duster to clean dusty surfaces or a damp microfiber cloth. Don't forget about often overlooked places like light switches and ceiling fans.
Pro tip: One tried and tested way to clean ceiling fan blades is to use old pillowcases to cover each blade and rub it with your hands from the outside. This way, you'll keep dust from falling into your bed.
Clean the floors
Vacuum or sweep the floors of the whole room to remove all traces of dirt and dust. Use a vacuum cleaner for carpeted floors or a broom and mop for your hardwood floors. Since you want to clean your room fast, focus on the areas with the most foot traffic for now.
One caveat to make your room smell fresh and wonderful is to sprinkle baking soda on the carpeted floors before vacuuming. Baking soda acts as a deodorizer, so it effectively eliminates bad odor. It's also good to open your windows when you clean to invite fresh air into the room.
Top Ways To Avoid A Messy Room
- Make the bedroom exclusively for rest. I don't take any work to bed to avoid clutter and have a good night's sleep. Doing this, I know I'll wake up to a clean room in the morning.
- Follow an excellent weekly cleaning schedule. It can be tough to completely clean your bedroom every day, so following a weekly cleaning routine can help you get rid of the messes regularly. Alternatively, you can focus on a small portion of the room one day at a time, making it less tedious than cleaning your room in one go.
How To Clean Your Bedroom In One Hour
If you've got more time, you can clean your bedroom with these easy steps:
- Remove dirty clothing from the bedroom and put them in the washer. Let the washer run while you're cleaning up the room. Put away clean clothes in your closet, and organize them. Hang your blouses and coats and fold your shirts. Keeping an organized closet can help you save time when choosing clothes and dressing up in the morning.
- Strip the bed and put on new sheets. Instead of just straightening out the kinks and wrinkles, strip the sheets from the bed and wash them. Don't re-make the bed yet since you'll have to clean the other parts of the bedroom. You can sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress and come back to it later to vacuum.
- Clear the clutter. Look for often neglected areas, such as your walk-in closet and under the bed, and remove clutter. Look around the room and pick up items that don't belong there. Sometimes you don't notice that you've accumulated too much stuff in less conspicuous areas, so now is the best time to check on them. Carry a trash bag as you go around to pick up garbage.
- Clean your bedroom door, windows, curtains, and blinds. Wipe down your bedroom door with an all-purpose room cleaner, and use the special attachment of your vacuum cleaner to remove dust from curtains and blinds.
- Wipe all your electronics. Use a glass cleaner to clean your TV screen and computer. Wipe down the surfaces of the TV rack and organize the cables. Disinfect the remote controls while you're at it.
- Clean your furniture and upholstery. Check out stains on your chair or couch and spot-treat them with the appropriate cleaning solution. Also, use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum to suck out dust from furniture and your mattress.
- Vacuum your mattress. Since you've already deodorized the mattress with baking soda earlier, you can now vacuum the mattress. Remember to vacuum not just the surfaces but also the edges and crevices.
- Re-assemble the bedroom. Remake the bed and put everything back into their proper places. Try removing a few more items from your room and see if it works. Put an air freshener or use a room freshener spray for a pleasant and welcoming scent.
Final Thoughts
Cleaning your room doesn’t have to take hours. Just a few intentional minutes each day—focusing on the most visible areas—can make a big difference in keeping your space neat and inviting. The real secret? Making tidying up a daily habit. Get used to picking up clutter, returning things to their rightful places, and sticking to a simple checklist or routine. It’s these small, consistent actions that prevent mess from turning into a mountain.
